If you see the below message appear when trying to install LockDown Browser, this means your computer is likely in S mode.

What is S-Mode?

Windows 11 in S mode (and Windows 10 in S mode) is a version of Windows that's streamlined for security and performance, while providing a familiar Windows experience. To increase security, it allows only apps from Microsoft Store, and requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing. To be able to install Respondus Lock-Down Browser, it is necessary to exit S Mode.

Check if your PC is in S mode

To check if your PC is using S-Mode, follow the steps below.

  1. In the Search tool on the taskbar, type in the word “about”. Click on “About your PC”

  1. On the About page, scroll down to the “Windows Specifications” section.

If you see the words “in S mode” to the right of the Edition entry, you're using an S Mode PC. If you don't, you're not using S Mode. Please contact the eLearning Center for assistance with installing Respondus Lock-down Browser.

How to Exit S Mode

To exit S mode, follow the steps below.

  1. If you're using a Windows 10 PC in S mode, open the Settings menu.

  1. Go to System and Open Store

  1. On the page labeled Switch out of S mode (or something similar) within the Microsoft Store, click on the Get button.

  1. Once a confirmation message appears, you'll be able to proceed with the installation of Lockdown Browser.

Keep in mind that Microsoft states that once you disable "S" mode, you won't be able to re-enable it on that device. Considering this, you might want to acquire a compatible operating system to ensure you can use LockDown Browser for your required exams.

Note: Boost Your Security

After leaving Windows 10 S Mode, bolster your system's security by enabling a reliable antivirus program.
